Aaron Hawthorne returns for his fifth annual visit to Ayr Town Hall for Ayr Film Society’s spooky silent film evening. This year’s film is the ‘original horror film’ from 1920, “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”.
"The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari", directed by Robert Wiene, is a landmark of German Expressionism. The story follows a hypnotist, Dr. Caligari, who uses a sleepwalker, Cesare, to commit murders. Told through a framing narrative, the film’s distorted sets and unreliable perspective blur reality and madness, culminating in a twist that questions the narrator’s sanity and authority.
